LOST - 02 x 01 - Man of Science, Man of Faith - A Jack Episode
Sep. 21st, 2005 @ 01:27 pm
Word on the street is that there are going to be Twenty-Three episodes this season. 23
Let's chat about the first one here. Haiku, optional. Yay.
*sqeeeee* it's comming on in an hour (where i am, don' know 'bout you) Here's a haiku!
Is killing me slowly
Oh Jack, I love you
Okay... they made Matthew Fox look so young in those flashbacks. I was all, "eEEeee, Party of Five!"... and then I blush because, y'know. I watched the first season of that back in the day for Matthew Fox. :) (And Ben)
Am I the only one on the East coast?
Hurry up and finish watching, everyone!!
I'm in the central time zone and I've seen it. So, where is everyone else?? I'm BUSTING to talk about it with someone!
I'm trying to figure out those clues that were given a few posts back about what was in the hatch. See, my problem is there was not just ONE thing in the hatch, and everything I think of and name doesn't start and end with the same letter, nor is it something I necessarily see every day.
And, I still don't know if Sawyer is alive or not and that frustrates me.
Locke is without doupt more certifably nuts than anyone lese on the island. And the thing with the jogger turning out to be the guy with the gun? Wiiiiiiird.
When he told Jack, "I'll see you in another life" I KNEW he was gonna be the guy in the hatch.

Okay. Just got home from spending the evening with mostlybeth
and we decided LOST is the most messed up crazy best TV show ever. The love is pure.
My thoughts are all over:
a. Locke/Sarah... where the lame can walk.
b. DesmonD. the MaN. Oh how in the world were we supposed to guess that? Hee.
c. Desmond in general: a roaring ten stars from me. I liked him from the very beginning. Now it maybe in part his 'tending' to Jack and anyone who takes care of Jack is okay in my book. I liked his spiritual sideways chitchat. I liked that he's... training for a race. Definite Biblical imagery, but I like the factualness of it. He was preparing to... travel the world. and it took him to the coordinates 4815162342...
d. the opening, mostlybeth
and I agreed that we love love love the fact that we were tracking, trying to figure it out: who is it, college student? no, in a kitchen, oh! surveilance equipment! rock, wait, he's checking the tunnel, oh my gosh! he's in the hatch. LOST is so bizarre. We love this.
e. So, Desmond calls Jack "brother"... so many possibilities.
f. Shannon, does not bathe. This is okay, as I half imagined they would be rather grimey after being on the island for over forty days. Sees dead-Sim!Walt dripping water across the jungle having been brought out by the conduit-medium-dog!Vincent. Shannon, Cassandra figure? I like that she's outspoken even when she's seen mystical stuff. She doesn't deny she heard voice, she speaks about it.
g. The Most Dangerous Game, anyone else remember that short story? I was wondering if LOST is like that in some senses. Correct me, my memory is fuzzy. Two guys are shipwrecked. End up on an island. Find 'host' living in luxury on the island. Man tells the survivors that if they can escape the island they can live... but Man will be hunting them and trying to kill them in the meantime. I half wondered if Desmond holing up in the hatch found that his way of 'surviving' some game.
h. he also dopes up or takes meds. To avoid infection. thus 'quarantine'?
i. must start new post. Brain is melting.
YAY NEW LOST! SO HAPPY.
Darn post got dumped. Trying to reconstruct thoughts...
c. I liked that he's... training for a race. Definite Biblical imagery, but I like the factualness of it. He was preparing to... travel the world.
Could this be what Kate was up to with all of her globe trotting and clue following? She was trained by her father. Maybe he was up to something too.
Here are my thoughts:
I am intrigued by the fact that one of the clues about what was in the hatch was that it was something that started and ended with the same letter.
The guy in the stadium/hatch was named DesmonD, so, I wonder if the clues weren't referring to one thing, but each to a different thing. I think one of the clues was "you're probably looking at one right now", which goes with computer. Maybe if it's a weird kind of computer that could be why we've never seen one before, but we sort of have. Ack!
Also, the accident wasn't Sara's fault, right? I mean, if she blew a tire it's not like she was negligent or something. Just a thought in response to the whole "who do you try to save first" commentary.
When Kate told Jack she'd have his back, I had a feeling she'd break that pact, but I didn't think she'd do it this soon. Did you guys?
It's easy to see everyone starting to draw lines in the sand.
Also, what was up with Walt? Was that just a coincidental hallucination, or did Walt project himself into her mind, or was he really there (I guess he could have been).
ALSO, and most importantly...
How does Desmond have fresh eggs in the hatch? Eeeeeww!! Grody!! Gag me with a spoon!! (All that 80s wafted up from the depths)

80s? I thought it was late 70s... he's so out of date.
DUDE GET AN ATRACK PLAYER!
Couldn't even show us the raft except in the preview. Ms. Floormate and I were cussing out the poor TV.
And now, what I've been waiting for:
Locke waited for Kate to come
New red-shirt needed
Desmond the Runner
Hiding under the damn hatch
And last but not least:
That's heavy drama
And you all know I loved it...
BUT WHERE'S MY SAWYER
Connecting the dots
between past and present life.
Desmond sits and waits.
When is a preview
not a preview? When it don't
show next week's new clips!
my thoughts before catching up
I took some notes while watching the second time through. In no particular order:
-I still don't get the riddle. *flails*
-Desmond could have been thing miracle maker for Jack there
-Locke, still using people. Big surprise there. And remember, Locke was the one that talked Jack into being the leader.
-Sayid knows about the voices and isn't talking…also might be worried about Shannon because she hears them and he had been warned by the French Lady to look out for that.
-Dog is still gone.
-The quarantine marker was on the inside of the hatch, meaning it was the outside that was being quarantined from the people inside, right? The outside is the dangerous place. Is something out there making folk crazy like the boat people and the French Lady?
-Desmond seemed a bit super human I the Ethan variety when he was running those stairs. Jack doesn't seem out of shape. Desmond just seemed too fast.
-Why did Hugo's crazy friend know the numbers? Did he go crazy on the island? That back story has blurred over the months for me
-Kate is clearly on one of her treasure hunts here imo. She has that look about her.
-Kate is also going so Jack can stay. Because Jack isn't a glass half full guy and the hope he gave the other people is a wing and a prayer.
-Rabbit hole. Kate. Something about Bunnies. I was so traumatized by the cartoon I can't read the book. Any thought from those who have?
-Locke doesn't mean Kate harm there in the rope scene, but he has a bit too much faith in the grand design that doesn't promise anyone will actually come out alive by following it. On the other hand, Jack wants everyone to make it to sunrise.
-Blast from the past: Was this where Claire was taken? Was super human Ethan buds with Desmond the body builder down in the cave of thieves? Might Ethan have nothing to do with the boat people. After all, the boat people wanted Walt while Ethan wanted the baby.
-Desmond's "Brother" thing. Is it some cult or fraternity thing? Mormons?! Please no!
-Desmond: "almost a doctor once", training for "a race around the world", "what if you did fix her?", "you have to lift it up", "see you in another life, aye?" WHAT IF DESMOND IS LIKE WALT? What if he can picture things in his head and make them happen? Walt caused a bird to hit a window. Made it so he'd win the board game over and over. Etc etc. Desmond saved the paralyzed lady with his BRAIN.
-Inside the cave thing: What was with the yellow siding that was magnetic? An old yellow house underground? And what about the pictures on the wall. Kid's drawings?
-That old computer looked like it was from the 80s. The face the keys made were like this: >: That is a monster face. The computer controls the monster!!!!!! RARRR!
Re: my thoughts before catching up
They fell down the 'rabbit hole'... Alice in Wonderland anyone? They're in a whole new world now :O
He takes anti-whisper drugs. :D
I agree with you about the 'Quarantine' comment. Very intriguing thought.
I like how when the light turned on in the hatch and us and Locke were all like 'ZOMG CRAZY MIRACLES TALKING ISLAND', and it was prolly just our new buddy Desmond wondering what all the racket was outside. Think like turning the porch light on. :D
1. Charlie is in high denial that there are others on the island. I remember back to when Charlie was taken and his strange silence afterwards. I still think that he came back changed someway. Even if it was enough to make him deny what he knows deep down is true. That there are "others." I forget about his amnesia sometime (making him Amnesia Boy to Claire's Amnesia Girl). But Claire says that she remembers some things, like she's seen them before. I wonder what Charlie's remembering? Or doesn't want to remember.
2. ARGH! I need to watch this episode like six more times in a row.
haiku. Hmm, haiku. I need to haiku.
How can he argue against the fact Ethan was there. Ethan was an 'other". ARG. That's what you get for messing with drugs. Pudding for brains.
Does Desmond anagram to anything or... anything? I know Ethan Rom did. Other Man. Hmmm. Desmond is such an unusual name. It looks like Demons except for the 's' and extra 'd'. Maybe Ethan and Desmond were a pair? Desmond was "The Man" and Ethan was the "Other Man"??
Must agree. Love this show. OMG.
I keep coming back to this comment... wishing I could puzzle it out. Because I feel the same way. I think that Ethan/DesmonD are foils for each other...
And I wouldn't be surprised to find out why they chose DesmonD's name. Do we have his last name? Perhaps we need those letters to capture the anagram.

IT WAS A TOLIET!
I meant there was a toliet in the room of the hatch. Which um... makes us right. Doesn't it?
OMG I AM SO WOUND UP!
|Date:||September 22nd, 2005 04:04 am (UTC)|| |
WTF? Was Desdomnd the answer to the riddle? Does that mean like... we all have strange looking scottsman that we see in the morning?
On the ABC message board, the buzz is that the guy that died in the ER was "Adam Rutherford" and that someone mentioned he was married to a wedding planner? So, that'd presumably be Shannon's father, right? Did anyone else catch that in the episode? I need to go back and rewatch.
I totally didn't catch that! oh, you're so attentive! i was busy freaking out over Jack with hair!

Watching the beginning of the episode with a friend, at the beginning when they did the "last time on 'Lost'" bit, the person that throws the "bomb" onto the raft is a blond female and we were thinking... maybe that's Danielle's Alex all grown up now?
Quite possibly! She'd need to be about 16, yes? And it sort of looks like a child might have done some growing up in the hatch... well, the artwork looked that way.
Unless DesmonD wishes he had some mad artist skills.
duuude. *in shock* sorry to spam the page, but the episode is over and i'm, like, unable to breathe. I thought at first when we saw all those flashes of Desmond doin' stuff in the beginning, that that it was either a Locke flashback or Alex, Danielle-french lady's son. But I fell off the couch when you finally do see that it's desmond. No joke, I've got a bump and everything!
We wondered if it was Locke, or Sawyer (although that seemed quite the long shot)...
Seriously. I love the fact they found DesmonD in the hatch. I cannot begin to describe how... okay and elated I am about that. Unexpect, but... cool.

Perusing the ABC boards...
1) there's the Yankee theory. From one of the threads:
"i just did some dirt dogging on the yankees info/baseball stuff. 4 8 15 16 23 42 are in fact the last 6 numbers ever retired by the yankees. Add in the Red Sox will never win the series comment, the aaron boone discovery, 108 stitches on a baseball. "
2) There is also some talk about some Genetic Mirror Theory on those boards which I don't entirely buy. However, if you go to oceanflight815.com and click on the bar code icon at the very bottom of the page, you get a box to enter code. type in theislandiswaiting (no spaces) and click submit. It comes up with a script page where Jack gets tackled and when he faces his attacker, the face he looks into is his own.
This got me thinking back to the episode where Boone got on the radio in the drug smugglers' plane and the response was "We're the survivors of flight 815". If there's a Jack 1 and Jack 2 like that script says, maybe there's 2 of everyone on the island and maybe Boone was talking to himself? And if you use the Genetic Mirror Theory which has been likened to the Doppleganager theory where if you meet your twin it's an omen of death... and Boone "met" his twin over the radio, therefor he was doomed to die?
I need to become a member of this community. I apologize for the spouting!
Consider yourself invited onboard! And we encourage spouting. I love new ideas brought to this table. :)
See, I'm not a sportsy girl and those Red Sox details MUST be important. But they're also the approximate lattitude and longitude coordinates for the island. I love the possible connections from a 'random' set of numbers.
FYI: Title your comments
If you title your comments it is much easier to follow the various threads after the automatic nesting thing happens. I made up the word "nesting" for this, but I think you all know what I mean. Collapse! I mean the automatic collapse! *does as much in bed*
Re: FYI: Title your comments
Cute Kaylee icon!!!
I always forget to title my comments until it's too late, but good advice. :)

4 8 15 16 23 42
The sum of all of these numbers is 108.
The message on the wall read 108 sick. These could be the numbers of people who died in different rounds of the infections.
For those who haven't played around with the numbers all that much -
Flight 815 departed from gate 23 at 4pm
Jack was seated in row 23, Michelle Rodriguez in row 42.
That's really cool, the 108 thing. Never realized that before. Hmmmm...
*sighs* I heard the Canadian promo actually had clips from next week's episode.
Canada is awesome (spoilers)
Sawyer pulls a half-drowned Michael back onto the raft and starts trying to resuscitate him. End clip.

1. Did anyone notice that the numbers are on the vials that the guy is shooting up with??? Why are the numbers on the vials and on the hatch?
2. The room that the guy (Desmond) is staying in appears to have sunlight coming through all the "windows"... but the folks above blew the hatch at night?!?
3. Desmond wakes up on a top bunk... why would someone stay on the top bunk if they were there alone?
Re: Crazy Findings...
>>1. Did anyone notice that the numbers are on the vials that the guy is shooting up with??? Why are the numbers on the vials and on the hatch?<<
Maybe they purposely correspond, as in those vials were meant to go with that hatch/containment place. At which point you wonder, does that mean there are other containment places?
>>2. The room that the guy (Desmond) is staying in appears to have sunlight coming through all the "windows"... but the folks above blew the hatch at night?!?<<
Well, remember, that structure is presumably underground. It seems unlikely that a big geodesic dome was standing just several feet away from the hatch and no one noticed. However...
The geodesic dome thingie sure looked like some type of bio-dome, didn't it? Which, presumably, would be above ground. I mean, it doesn't seem to be the type of structure that would be placed underground. It looked like those were glass panels, which wouldn't make sense as a load bearing structure (assuming there is ground above it, which there should be because Jack had to go 30-40 feet below ground to get to it). Maybe we were seeing a panel that was a light or something?
>>3. Desmond wakes up on a top bunk... why would someone stay on the top bunk if they were there alone?<<
Heck yeah, I would!! :P Not only is the top bunk fun (hey, if you're living underground on a presumably deserted island, you gotta preserve your inner-child, right?) but in all seriousness, it might feel safer. I know I'd feel safer on the top bunk if I was all alone. Although, I still like the idea that Ethan and DesmonD are a pair, so maybe that was Ethan's bunk and he doesn't have the heart to steal it.
Okay. Is this
the song DesmomD was listenign to? Are those the lyrics? *ponders*

Speaking of Michelle Rodriguez...
Why was Michelle Rodriguez in the beginning credits but not shown in the show at all so far (except 1st episode)?
|Date:||September 23rd, 2005 02:51 am (UTC)|| |
Re: Speaking of Michelle Rodriguez...
If you noticed, there wer quite a few people listed in the openingcredits not in the episode. I think it merely signifies that they will be major chars this season
This all oddly reminds me of my favorite book from 3rd grade, Running Out of Time, which is where I learned
the word "quarentine". And she thinks she lives in like the 1800's but she finds something of a hatch in the woods and goes through it to find out that it is really 1996 and she is living in a tourist attraction......
"GO" and other interesting thoughts...
So, my brother tells me that there was a game set up on a table in the bunker. He said it's a two player game called "GO", and it's played with little black and white pieces. Hmmmm. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Go_board.jpg
Further evidence that there was a second person in the hatch.
My brother thinks it's a bio-sphere and that the light coming in was artificial and having something to do with a hydroponics room (because this guy's gotta be getting fresh food somewhere). I guess that could explain light coming into a structure that is apparently 40-50 feet underground. Although, someone else pointed out that the sequence of him waking up and getting ready (showering, exercising, eating) could have taken place over several hours, so it could still have been light outside. But then, if any part of that structure is above ground, how could the survivors miss it?
There's just too much to think about. I think my brain is boiling over! :P
Re: "GO" and other interesting thoughts...
Also, I know earlier in the thread we were talking about the timeline a little, trying to figure out how long the guy's been in the hatch.
A lot of people so far are inclined to think he's been down there since the 70s or 80s based on the old computer, the lava lamp, the records, etc. However, if that is in fact DesmonD from the stadium, we know that he can't have been in there longer than 12 years, because Shannon is 20 now and her father was still alive when she was 8 and married Boone's mother.
Also, note this... there are a lot of brand new high tech looking things inside the hatch. Check out this screen capture my brother made. That washer and dryer are on sale *now* at Best Buy. What the??http://eloramoon.com/lost00027df.jpg
Even the blender looks high tech. And, what *is* up with the light coming in the window? Is it artificial sunlight? Is part of the structure peeking up above ground and just really well hidden? I guess just because the hatch goes down 40-50 feet doesn't mean part of the underground structure can't be against a hillside, and thus have a window. But still, how could the islanders miss that?
|Date:||September 23rd, 2005 02:54 am (UTC)|| |
Heehee... I play Go as well. And I missed it in the episode also.
If you're ever up for a game, let me know :)
I should take you up on that offer! Although, I must let you know I've only played in RL and I'm as novice of a beginner as you can call green.

Re: The wonders of monsterface--I mean command prompt.
Aha ha ha! That's awesome.
